Saskatchewan has begun imposing a 50% retaliatory fee on American alcohol purchased by liquor retailers, as the province responds to escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States.
The measure, announced by Premier Scott Moe last month, took effect alongside Canada’s latest round of retaliatory tariffs against U.S. goods. The move follows the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations and Washington’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian liquor and other products.
The Saskatchewan levy applies to U.S.-produced alcohol purchased through the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority’s online ordering system, which is used by retailers across the province.
Unlike several other Canadian provinces, Saskatchewan has not banned American alcohol from store shelves. Moe has defended that approach, saying consumers should retain the ability to choose what products they purchase.
According to the premier, sales of American alcohol in Saskatchewan have already fallen by about 40%, while sales of Saskatchewan-made products have increased. Moe argued that consumers choosing Canadian products can send a stronger economic message than a government-ordered ban.
The decision has drawn criticism from Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck, who has argued that the provincial government’s response does not go far enough in confronting U.S. trade pressure.
The Saskatchewan measure comes as Canada implements retaliatory tariffs covering approximately C$20 billion worth of U.S. goods, with tariff rates ranging from 15% to 50%. The federal measures were introduced after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on Canadian products.
Saskatchewan’s decision also contrasts with the approach taken by neighboring Alberta. Premier Danielle Smith has not imposed a similar retaliatory levy on American alcohol, although her government has said it would consider such a measure.
The growing differences between provinces highlight the broader challenge facing Canada as governments balance retaliation against U.S. trade measures with concerns about consumer choice, business costs and economic stability.
The trade standoff continues to place pressure on Canadian businesses and consumers, while Ottawa seeks to maintain negotiations with Washington and protect Canadian economic interests.
