Poilievre Presses Carney to Release Gordie Howe International Bridge Agreement

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to publicly release the agreement surrounding the Gordie Howe International Bridge, questioning the details of the arrangement and demanding greater transparency from the federal government.

Speaking during a public appearance, Poilievre challenged Carney by asking, “What’s the deal?” as he urged the government to disclose the full terms of the agreement governing the multibillion-dollar bridge project connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan.

The Conservative leader argued that Canadians deserve to know the financial and operational commitments tied to the international crossing, particularly any revenue-sharing arrangements or long-term obligations involving Canada and the United States.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Canadian history, is expected to strengthen trade, improve cross-border transportation, and enhance economic ties between Canada and the United States once it officially opens.

Poilievre maintained that releasing the agreement would allow Parliament and the public to properly evaluate whether the project represents good value for taxpayers and whether Canada’s interests have been adequately protected.

The federal government has defended its handling of the project, stating that the bridge remains a strategic investment designed to improve trade efficiency, reduce border congestion, and support long-term economic growth. Officials have also emphasized that discussions involving international infrastructure projects often include commercially sensitive information.

The debate comes amid growing political scrutiny over major infrastructure spending and government transparency, with opposition parties calling for greater public access to agreements involving significant taxpayer investments.

Economic analysts note that the Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to play a vital role in facilitating billions of dollars in annual trade between Canada and the United States, making it one of North America’s most important transportation corridors.

As political pressure continues, the Carney government has yet to indicate whether it intends to make additional details of the bridge agreement publicly available.

The issue is expected to remain a point of debate in Parliament as both government and opposition lawmakers continue discussing accountability, infrastructure investment, and Canada–U.S. economic cooperation.
