Brazil Held by Morocco in World Cup Opener as Carlo Ancelotti Faces Early Backlash

Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign began with disappointment as the five-time champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in their opening Group C match, triggering immediate criticism of head coach Carlo Ancelotti and the team’s performance.

Thousands of Brazilian supporters packed MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, hoping to see the Seleção make a strong statement in their first match of the tournament. Instead, they witnessed a nervy and uneven display that left many fans frustrated at the final whistle.

Morocco stunned Brazil in the 21st minute after capitalizing on a midfield turnover. Brahim Diaz delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Ismael Saibari, who calmly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Alisson Becker to give the North Africans a deserved lead.

Brazil struggled to find rhythm for much of the first half and looked vulnerable against Morocco’s aggressive pressing and pace. However, Vinícius Júnior once again proved to be Brazil’s standout performer. The Real Madrid star produced a moment of brilliance to level the score, weaving past defenders before firing an unstoppable strike beyond Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The second half saw Brazil improve, with Vinícius continuing to create danger. One of the best opportunities fell to Raphinha after a clever pass from the winger, but the Barcelona forward failed to capitalize, shooting directly at Bounou.

Following the match, Ancelotti acknowledged that his players struggled with nerves and pressure during the opening stages of the game. The veteran Italian manager insisted that one match would not define Brazil’s World Cup campaign and expressed confidence that the team would improve as the tournament progresses.

Despite his optimism, Brazilian media and supporters questioned several of Ancelotti’s decisions, including his starting lineup and substitutions. Many were particularly surprised that teenage striker Endrick was not introduced as Brazil searched for a winning goal.

Ancelotti, who took charge of Brazil in 2025 after a trophy-laden career with European giants including Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, said criticism is part of football and vowed that his side would respond positively in upcoming matches.

While Brazil avoided defeat thanks to Vinícius Júnior’s brilliance, the draw has increased pressure on the World Cup favorites ahead of their next group-stage fixture. With expectations sky-high for the Seleção, Ancelotti and his players know that stronger performances will be required if they hope to challenge for a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
