Ukraine’s political leadership is facing renewed pressure after the country’s anti-corruption agencies announced an investigation involving senior officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, while recently dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for national elections despite the ongoing war with Russia.
Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) said investigators were conducting an operation targeting an alleged criminal organization involving a sitting and former lawmaker, senior presidential-office officials and other individuals. The agencies said further details would be released later.
The investigation adds to political challenges facing Zelenskyy after his decision last month to dismiss Fedorov, a prominent reform advocate who had pushed changes to military procurement. The move triggered protests and renewed debate over the direction of Ukraine’s wartime leadership.
Fedorov escalated the political dispute Tuesday by publicly calling for elections. In an online address, he argued that Ukraine needs a legal and secure mechanism to restore a full democratic process despite the prolonged war and martial law.
Ukraine has not held national elections during the full-scale war because martial law remains in place. Fedorov’s call is significant because it represents one of the most prominent public challenges to Zelenskyy’s approach to wartime governance since Russia’s invasion began in 2022.
The political controversy comes as Ukraine continues fighting Russia and faces pressure over military supplies, corruption reforms and public confidence in government institutions. Zelenskyy’s administration has also faced scrutiny from international partners over its efforts to strengthen anti-corruption safeguards.
Fedorov’s comments and the latest corruption investigation could intensify debate over Ukraine’s political future, particularly over how and when elections could be safely organized while the country remains at war.
The developments create another difficult test for Zelenskyy as he attempts to balance military priorities, anti-corruption reforms and demands for stronger democratic accountability.
