Kathy Hilton Steps Down from West Hollywood Pride Role Following Community Backlash

Reality television personality Kathy Hilton will no longer serve as the Grand Marshal Icon for the 2026 West Hollywood Pride Parade after criticism from some members of the LGBTQ+ community prompted city officials and organizers to reconsider the appointment.

The decision was announced in a joint statement from the City of West Hollywood, the WeHo Pride production team, and Hilton herself. The move comes less than a week after her selection sparked controversy online.

Critics questioned Hilton’s suitability for the role, citing perceptions of her political affiliations and allegations that resurfaced from a 2022 episode involving the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Some social media users pointed to reports of Hilton’s presence at events connected to President Donald Trump and revisited claims that she used a homophobic slur during a cast trip to Aspen, Colorado. Hilton has consistently denied the allegation.

Among those expressing concern was Tyler Oakley, who publicly questioned the decision to honor Hilton at a major Pride event.

In response to the criticism, a representative for Hilton stated that she has not endorsed any political candidate since 2008 and does not identify with the MAGA movement. The spokesperson added that Hilton’s attendance at events connected to the Trump family was based on personal and social relationships rather than political support.

Following discussions among city officials, event organizers, and Hilton, the Grand Marshal Icon designation was withdrawn ahead of the parade scheduled for Sunday.

“The City of West Hollywood has always believed that Pride belongs to the community,” city officials said in a statement, emphasizing the importance of community input and dialogue.

Hilton said she respects the conversations that followed her appointment and reaffirmed her support for LGBTQ+ causes. She highlighted her long-standing involvement with organizations including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, God’s Love We Deliver, and Project Angel Food.

Hilton also reflected on her previous role as Grand Marshal of the LA Pride Parade 2005 alongside her daughter, describing Pride events as having a special place in her heart and expressing her support for a successful West Hollywood Pride weekend.

The development underscores the growing scrutiny public figures face when selected for prominent roles at community events, particularly those tied to social and cultural advocacy movements.
