French singer and actor Patrick Bruel has been taken into police custody as authorities investigate allegations of rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault made by at least 13 women, according to prosecutors in Nanterre, France.

The 67-year-old entertainer, one of the most recognizable figures in French-speaking music and cinema, has been in police custody since Monday. Bruel has denied all allegations through his legal team.

French prosecutors said the investigation was initially launched after three women accused the singer of sexual assault and attempted rape in incidents allegedly dating back to 1997, 2000, and 2001. As investigators pursued the case, additional women came forward with allegations involving rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and harassment spanning several decades.

The growing investigation has expanded beyond France. Authorities confirmed that a separate case involving an alleged rape in Dinard, Brittany, in 2012 has been transferred to the Nanterre prosecutor’s office. French prosecutors have also received information from Belgian authorities regarding allegations made by a woman who claims Bruel committed rape and sexual assault in Brussels in 2010.

Bruel’s lawyers stated that the singer has been willing to cooperate with investigators and has made himself available to judicial authorities in order to address the allegations through the legal process.

The case has attracted significant public attention due to Bruel’s status as one of France’s most celebrated entertainers. Rising to fame during the 1980s and 1990s, he became a household name across the French-speaking world through a series of chart-topping songs that remain deeply embedded in French popular culture. In addition to his music career, Bruel has appeared in more than 40 film and television productions.

Recent reports by French investigative media outlet Mediapart brought renewed attention to allegations against the singer, prompting further complaints and encouraging additional women to speak with investigators.

French judicial authorities are expected to determine whether Bruel will face preliminary charges or be released without charges following questioning. The investigation remains ongoing, and no formal conviction or finding of guilt has been made.

As the case develops, it is likely to become one of the most closely watched legal proceedings involving a major figure in France’s entertainment industry, raising broader discussions about accountability and historical allegations within the cultural sector.
