A Michigan man who killed his best friend just hours after getting married has been sentenced to at least 30 years in prison.
James Shirah, 24, received the sentence Monday in Flint after pleading no contest in April to second-degree murder and several related charges connected to the death of his longtime friend, Terry Taylor Jr..
The fatal incident happened on Aug. 30, 2024, following Shirah’s wedding to Savanah Collier. After the ceremony, the celebration continued at a house gathering where an alcohol-fueled argument reportedly broke out.
Prosecutors said Shirah left the scene after the dispute, then returned and intentionally struck Taylor with his vehicle. Defense attorneys argued the crash was not deliberate.
During sentencing in Genesee County court, Shirah expressed remorse for his actions.
“The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse … I will forever be sorry,” he told the court.
Judge Khary Hanible acknowledged Shirah’s background but emphasized the seriousness of the crime during sentencing.
“Mr. Shirah, I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer,” the judge said.
Family members of the victim also addressed the court before sentencing. Taylor’s cousin, Eren Taylor, urged the judge to impose the maximum punishment.
Shirah will become eligible for parole after serving 30 years behind bars.
Meanwhile, his wife, Collier, is expected to be sentenced later this month on charges connected to being an accessory in the case.
