The Winnipeg Steel Orchestra is celebrating decades of music, cultural heritage and community engagement, with its history stretching back to its formation in 1972.
Speaking at the Africa Pavilion, the orchestra’s leader explained that he joined the group in 1974 and has remained part of its musical journey for decades. He described the orchestra’s distinctive sound and its connection to the African diaspora, explaining that steelpan music was developed by descendants of enslaved Africans in the Caribbean.
According to the orchestra leader, this cultural history was one of the reasons the group was featured at the Africa Pavilion, where members performed for visitors and shared the story behind their instruments and music.
The orchestra uses different sections of steel instruments, including soprano, alto, tenor and bass, with each playing a distinct role in creating the group’s signature sound. Together, the instruments produce the layered harmonies and rhythms that define steelpan music.
Over the years, the Winnipeg Steel Orchestra has built an extensive performance history. The group has performed alongside the Winnipeg Orchestra twice and has also collaborated with the Symphony Orchestra on two occasions.
The orchestra has also taken part in major events, including a performance at the closing ceremony of a game in 1999. In 2002 and 2022, the group also performed at closing ceremonies connected to major sporting events.
Beyond Manitoba, the orchestra has travelled extensively, performing for audiences in different locations and bringing steelpan music and its cultural roots to a wider audience.
The group has also produced four CDs, copies of which were displayed at the Africa Pavilion during its performance. Visitors were able to purchase the recordings for $10 and take home a piece of the orchestra’s music.
After decades of performances, collaborations and cultural presentations, the orchestra’s leader said the group remains proud of its journey and happy to continue sharing its music with audiences.
The Winnipeg Steel Orchestra’s story reflects the enduring influence of African diasporic culture and the ability of music to connect communities, preserve heritage and create lasting memories.
