A senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Jibrin Okutepa, has advised the Supreme Court to revisit some of its decisions that were rooted in technicalities in electoral jurisprudence.
Okutepa gave the advice in Abuja, at the first Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) roundtable with the theme: “The Role of the Judiciary in Nigeria’s Democratic Sustainability”.
He explained that such technicalities should be revisited, particular on subpoenaed witnesses in election petition cases, as according to him, it is also necessary for all Nigerian courts and Tribunals dealing with electoral disputes to avoid technicality, analogue jurisprudence to digital jurisprudence where the use of technological devices to resolve electoral disputes is encouraged.
IPAC National Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, said that the council thought it necessary to convene the roundtable among relevant stakeholders to explore the judiciary’s role in consolidating democracy in Nigeria, this according to him calls for urgent judicial reform to save the judiciary and restore its integrity and honour as the temple of justice and the last hope of all aggrieved people.
