The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said the recent attack on its image by the Senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District, Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, was borne out of vendetta and malice rather than based on any altruistic motive or national interest.
The agency said it was left with no option but to come out to set the record straight for the benefit of other distinguished members of the Senate, its local and international partners as well as the public following the failure of the lawmaker after one week to clarify his position on a weighty allegation made against the anti-narcotic agency.
The NDLEA stated this at its national headquarters in Abuja at a press briefing addressed to respond to a statement credited to Senator Ashiru where he said “the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is corrupt and compromised.
Spokesperson of the agency, Femi Babafemi said, the NDLEA is compelled to call this press briefing because of an unfortunate development earlier last week during plenary in the Nigerian Senate when some uncomplimentary, unfounded, defamatory remarks were made against the agency.
Babafemi, highlighted several past encounters with Senator Ashiru, including a raid on his Ilorin residence on February 4, 2024, where illicit drugs were discovered, leading to the arrest of two of his aides. Also, one of his associates was arrested with methamphetamine and cannabis when his residence in Offa was raided in June.
The NDLEA maintained that despite the impression being created by the lawmaker about its image, the agency has continued to receive accolades from local and international bodies for its successes in the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
