Motorists and commuters in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital are lamenting over the sudden scarcity of fuel, popularly called petrol.
This has resulted in transport fares increase by commercial bus drivers within the city.
As Fuel queues resurfaced, most filling stations shut down, and motorists struggled with the skyrocketing fuel prices. It has gone as high as N850 in some filling stations and over N1000 in the black market.
Only a few fuel stations are dispensing the product, mainly the state-run Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPCL stations. This is coming barely six days before the commencement of the planned nationwide protest over economic challenges.
Many filling stations which seemed to have run out of stock, were seen under lock and key.
Others shut their gates against the public who were hoping to get some petrol.
There were long queues as panic buying continued. This resulted in gridlock along the roads where filling stations were selling petrol.
Men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authorities, LASTMA, were overwhelmed as they could not control the large number of motorists searching for petrol.
