The United States has launched a comprehensive strategy to solidify its position as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI), as detailed in a new National Security Memorandum (NSM) unveiled by President Joe Biden. This initiative places AI at the heart of national security, aiming to drive innovation while protecting citizens’ rights and privacy.
According to the White House, the AI memo directs US agencies to fortify semiconductor supply chains, embed AI considerations in government technology, and ramp up intelligence gathering on foreign AI advancements. An official noted, “Outpacing adversaries and mitigating AI-related threats is essential for US security.” This aligns with Biden’s stance on AI development, promoting safety, security, and trustworthiness.
The administration emphasizes AI’s role in safeguarding human rights and democratic values, mandating agencies to “monitor, assess, and mitigate” risks associated with privacy, discrimination, and other potential abuses. By collaborating with allies, the US aims to establish AI frameworks by international law, ensuring AI’s ethical usage on a global scale.
Next month, the US will host a global summit in San Francisco to discuss AI safety and regulation with international partners. This summit signifies a critical step towards creating robust policies for responsible AI development, reflecting the administration’s commitment to balancing innovation with oversight.
