A 162-member marching band from the University of North Dakota is preparing to perform at a Winnipeg Blue Bombers game this week, bringing a cross-border cultural connection to the spotlight as political and trade tensions between Canada and the United States continue to rise.
The Pride of the North marching band, based in Grand Forks, North Dakota, will perform at halftime when the Blue Bombers host the Montreal Alouettes at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday. The game is also scheduled as Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Night.
Band director Josh Gillen said the group views Winnipeg as part of its extended community, noting the city is only about two hours north of Grand Forks. He said the students hope their performance can help build bridges between communities on both sides of the border.
The invitation was extended to the band early last winter, before the latest escalation in Canada-U.S. trade relations. Two Blue Bombers players, Brady Oliveira and Evan Holm, who are University of North Dakota alumni, will also be recognized during Friday’s event.
The appearance has attracted additional attention because Canada and the United States are currently engaged in a trade war involving tariffs on billions of dollars worth of goods. Some people online have questioned whether hosting a U.S. university group is appropriate amid the heightened political tensions.
For the students, however, the focus remains on performing. Drum major Matthew Eisinger said adapting to the larger Canadian Football League field presents a challenge, but the band has prepared by practicing on a field designed to replicate the dimensions.
The band is expected to perform an ABBA-heavy setlist and will also appear in tailgate areas before the game and in a post-game performance.
The Winnipeg appearance offers a reminder that cultural, sporting and community connections between Canadians and Americans continue even as political disagreements over tariffs and trade put pressure on the bilateral relationship.
