Russian drones have targeted gas stations in Kyiv, in an overnight attack that Ukrainian officials say was intended to frighten civilians and disrupt daily life in the Ukrainian capital.
The latest assault is part of Russia’s continuing campaign of long-range drone and missile strikes against Ukraine. Kyiv has repeatedly been targeted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, with attacks damaging residential areas, energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure.
Ukrainian authorities said the drones struck or damaged gas stations and other sites in and around the capital. Emergency crews were deployed to affected locations to deal with fires, assess damage and assist residents.
The targeting of fuel infrastructure has raised particular concern because gas stations are essential to transportation and emergency services. Damage to such facilities can also create additional difficulties for residents already coping with repeated air-raid alerts and disruptions caused by the war.
Ukrainian officials have continued to urge residents to take shelter when air-raid warnings are issued, as Russia increasingly relies on large numbers of relatively inexpensive drones to overwhelm Ukraine’s air-defense systems.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called on Ukraine’s international partners to provide additional air-defense equipment, arguing that stronger defenses are necessary to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.
Russia has generally said its aerial strikes are directed at military and strategic targets. Ukraine, however, regularly reports damage to civilian facilities and infrastructure during Russian bombardments.
The latest drone attack comes as the broader Russia-Ukraine war continues with no lasting ceasefire in place. Both countries have expanded their use of drones for attacks far beyond the immediate front lines.
For residents of Kyiv, the repeated strikes have created an atmosphere of uncertainty, with explosions and air-raid warnings disrupting ordinary activities.
The attacks on gas stations underline how Russia’s drone campaign can affect not only military targets but also infrastructure used by civilians, adding to the pressure on Ukrainian communities more than four years into the full-scale war.
