  • (VIDEO) Reps Summon Housing Minister Over ‘Poor’ Estate Project

    The House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, over the alleged poor execution of the Renewed Hope Estate Project, in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
    The House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, during an oversight visit to the project, at the weekend, expressed dismay over the implementation of the project.
    The lawmakers equally frowned at the quality of job on the Umu Etuk-Spencer Esin slum upgrade road network in Oron also in Akwa Ibom State.

    Consequently, the chairman of the committee, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, directed that the Housing and Urban Development Minister be invited to appear before the lawmakers, alongside the four contractors, handling the projects, on Thursday.
    Abiante expressed dismay that, the level of work on the 250 housing units estate, which is handled by three different contractors, despite being funded to 30 percent each by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, was less than six percent.

    According to him, the project which was awarded in June 2024 ought to have been completed since September 2024.

    The lawmaker, while calling for a total reconstruction of the Umu Etuk-Spencer Esin road slum upgrade, urged Dangiwa, to engage sincere and experienced contractors in the implementation of federal projects.

    He said ”The contractor that handled this Oron road project succeeded in wasting funds allocated to it on substandard materials. As you can see the visible deplorable state of a road newly constructed in July this year, aiming to ameliorate the sufferings of the people living in this region. The Committee is not happy with this situation.”

    Abiante noted that the appearance of the Minister amd the contractors before the lawmakers will enable would expose the Committee to the factors responsible to the current state of the two projects.

    The Ondo state All Progressives Congress has attributed the recent victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa at the recently concluded Governorship election, to the ability of the Party to unite its members.

    The state Chairman of the party, Ade Adetimehin while speaking to newsmen in the company of the Governor, urged residents to trust the ability of the governor to deliver on his campaign promises, saying that he has been tested, trusted and has acquired adequate experience on the job.
    Ondo State governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, had called for unity and renewed commitment from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the November 16 governorship election in the state.
    Speaking at different APC Stakeholders meetings held in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa had emphasised that the party’s strength lies in collective efforts and urged members to intensify grassroots mobilisation.
    The Governor inaugurated the APC State Campaign Council, with a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Ondo East/Ondo West federal constituency, Hon. Abiola Makinde, as the Director-General of the campaign.

    Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Works has assured contractors involved in the rehabilitation of major roads in the northwest region of the country, of the government’s commitment to resolving any challenges, affecting their work.
    The Director of the Federal Highways at the Ministry of Works, Goni Mohammed said that once completed, the projects will alleviate traffic congestion, enhance economic activities, and improve connectivity between the northern and southern parts of the country.
    He said this during an inspection visit to Kaduna State, to assess the status of several ongoing road projects.

    Former Delta State governor Chief James Onanefe Ibori, has unveiled a platform, Otemu Educational Foundation (OEF), to provide education for young Deltans who are unable to access qualitative education.

    Ibori made the disclosure identifying education as critical in eradicating poverty.

    With the motto, “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow,” the ex-governor expressed hope that the foundation would have the desired impact of changing the lives of its beneficiaries.

    He said “It is with great pride and a profound sense of purpose that I introduce the Otemu Educational Foundation (OEF). This initiative was born from a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education and a commitment to uplift the indigent yet incredibly talented youth of Delta State, Nigeria.

    The foundation will offer scholarships and resources to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring that they have access to the opportunities needed to succeed academically. Ibori also revealed that the foundation is in the process of developing a world-class, digitally driven system for pre-selection and candidate profiling. This initiative aims to ensure that the students selected for support demonstrate both academic potential and strong character.

    According to the former governor, a dedicated web portal for the foundation will be launched soon, marking the commencement of the application season. The portal will streamline the application process, ensuring transparency and accessibility for eligible students.

    The Timmins-based rock band Miners and Sons has officially set a Guinness World Record by performing a concert in the world’s deepest base metal mine. Playing at a staggering depth of 9,000 feet below sea level in Glencore’s Kidd Mine, the band surpassed the previous record of 6,200 feet, cementing their place in rock history.

    The concert took place at 9:20 a.m. for an exclusive audience of around 40, including miners, Timmins city officials, and special guests such as Ontario’s Minister of Mines. Band member Jeremy Wilson described the energy of the performance, saying, “For an early morning gig like this, it was nice to see people bring the energy and enjoy it.”

    Organizing the event was a monumental task, paying tribute to the dedication of the Kidd Mine team. “This record-breaking concert reflects the ingenuity and determination of everyone who works here,” said Kidd Mine Manager Dawid Myburgh.
