    Judge Arun Subramanian denied Combs’ bail application on Wednesday, following a detailed court hearing on Friday. In his five-page ruling, the judge stated, “The Court finds that the government has shown by clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of the community.”

    Prosecution’s Allegations

    Federal prosecutors argued that Combs is a flight risk and a threat to the community. They accused him of violating jail regulations and attempting to tamper with witnesses. Prosecutors allege that while in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Combs used tactics like three-way calling to contact witnesses and violated court orders limiting his communications. They also claimed he orchestrated a social media campaign around his birthday to influence public opinion and potentially sway the jury pool.

    Judge Subramanian highlighted Combs’ continued use of a prohibited messaging service, ContactMeASAP, despite previous assurances from his defense team that he had stopped. According to court records, Combs accessed the service as recently as November 24, 2024.

    Defense’s Argument for Bail

    Combs’ legal team has been persistent in seeking his release, proposing a $50 million bond and strict monitoring measures. They argued that private security at a designated Manhattan apartment would offer more stringent restrictions than federal custody. The defense also emphasized the need for Combs to actively participate in preparing his defense for both the criminal charges and over 30 civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct.

    However, Judge Subramanian dismissed these assurances, expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of the proposed measures. He also rejected the idea of Combs staying at his Miami home, complete with a private dock, stating it was “not going to work.”

    A Troubled Legal Battle

    Combs, who was arrested in September, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is set to stand trial on May 5, 2025. This marks the third time bail has been denied, with two previous judges also concluding that no conditions could ensure public safety or prevent obstruction.

    Toronto police have arrested a Burlington woman accused of scamming dozens of Taylor Swift fans out of nearly $70,000 by selling fraudulent concert tickets. Using the alias “Denise Blackhawk” on Facebook Marketplace, the suspect allegedly convinced fans to e-transfer payments with the promise of tickets that would arrive closer to concert dates. However, the tickets never materialized, leaving fans without their money or access to Swift’s highly anticipated shows.

    According to police, at least 28 victims sent the woman money for tickets, with some of these transactions occurring as early as 2023 when tickets initially went on sale. When fans requested refunds, the accused reportedly claimed the money was already gone, further exacerbating the financial loss and frustration among her victims.

    The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, now faces 32 counts of fraud under $5,000, one count of fraud over $5,000, and corresponding charges related to possession of crime-related property. She is scheduled to appear in court on January 10. Toronto police are working with Halton police on the investigation and believe more victims may still be out there.

    The scam has left hundreds of fans devastated, with one victim, Melinda Tarantino, losing over $3,000 on tickets for herself and her daughters. Tarantino has compiled the stories of nearly 160 individuals affected by the scam and has provided this information to Halton police. Authorities urge anyone in Toronto who suspects they may have purchased a fraudulent ticket to contact police or submit an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers.

    The House of Representatives has rejected a proposed bill seeking to introduce a six-year single term for Nigeria’s president.

    The bill, sponsored by Ikenga Ugochinyere from Imo State and 33 other lawmakers, was dismissed during Thursday’s plenary session after failing to pass its second reading.

    The proposed legislation also included a six-year term for governors, rotation of executive powers among the six geopolitical zones, and other constitutional amendments aimed at promoting equal representation and reducing agitation for state creation.

    Currently, the 1999 Constitution provides for a four-year presidential term with the possibility of re-election for a second term.

    The bill also sought to amend Section 3 of the Constitution to recognize Nigeria’s division into six geopolitical zones, create the offices of two vice presidents (one each from the North and South), and consolidate all elections—including presidential, governorship, and legislative—on the same day.

    However, the House unanimously rejected the bill after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas called for a voice vote, with the “nays” overwhelmingly outweighing the “ayes.”
