Ukraine launched one of its largest aerial attacks of the war on Russia on Sunday, sending hundreds of drones toward Moscow and other Russian regions in an escalation of Kyiv’s long-range strike campaign. At least six people were killed, according to Russian authorities.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that around 600 drones were detected heading toward the Russian capital. About one-third were reportedly destroyed over the Moscow region.
In the Moscow region, an 83-year-old man was killed after a Ukrainian drone struck a private home. A separate attack also sparked a major fire at a warehouse belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries in Podolsk.
Five additional deaths were reported in Russia’s Rostov region, where authorities said a drone attack damaged homes and a railway station and triggered a forest fire.
The latest strikes represent a significant expansion of Ukraine’s campaign to attack targets deep inside Russian territory. Kyiv has increasingly relied on long-range drones and missiles to target military-industrial facilities, energy infrastructure and logistics sites connected to Russia’s war effort.
The attacks came as Russia continued its own aerial campaign against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported deaths and injuries from Russian strikes, including attacks on Kryvyi Rih, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia, while Kyiv also reported damage to civilian and industrial infrastructure.
The escalation underscores the increasingly important role of long-range drones in the Russia-Ukraine war, as both sides seek to strike military and strategic targets far from the front lines.
