UK Bars Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker From Entering Country Ahead of Speaking Engagements

The United Kingdom has denied entry to prominent left-wing American commentators Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker, preventing both media personalities from attending scheduled speaking engagements in London and Oxford this week.

The decision was confirmed after Britain’s Interior Ministry revoked the travel authorizations of the two commentators, stating that their presence in the country “may not be conducive to the public good.” The government did not provide further details or mention Israel in its official statement.

Uygur, founder and co-host of the popular political commentary platform The Young Turks, and his nephew, political streamer and commentator Hasan Piker, both claimed the move was linked to their criticism of Israel and its policies.

“I’ve been banned for criticizing Israel. Are we free anymore?” Uygur wrote on social media after reportedly being prevented from boarding a flight to Britain.

Piker also criticized the decision, alleging that the visa revocation was influenced by Israel, though no evidence supporting that claim was provided by British authorities.

The pair had been scheduled to appear at the London edition of SXSW London, where Piker was set to discuss how progressive political movements have adapted to online platforms. Uygur was expected to participate in a session examining the growing influence of technology and economic power structures.

Both were also slated to speak at University of Oxford later in the week.

Event descriptions published by SXSW London made no reference to Israel, focusing instead on technology, media, politics, and culture.

The development comes amid ongoing debates over free speech and political expression in the United Kingdom. Over the past year, U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have publicly raised concerns about what they describe as restrictions on free speech in Britain and other European countries.

The British government has previously used immigration powers to block foreign speakers it considers contrary to the public interest. In May, authorities barred 11 individuals described as foreign far-right activists from entering the country to attend an event linked to anti-Islam campaigner Tommy Robinson.

Uygur remains one of the most recognizable progressive political commentators in the United States. According to SXSW London, his media network attracts more than 200 million monthly views across digital platforms. Piker, meanwhile, commands a large online audience through live-streaming platform Twitch, where he discusses politics, current affairs, and internet culture.

The UK government’s decision is likely to intensify discussions surrounding immigration policy, political speech, and the role governments play in determining who may enter the country for public events.
