Trump Orders Investigation Into EU Trade Practices, Alleges Unfair Treatment of U.S. Tech Giants

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will investigate the European Union’s trade practices, claiming the bloc has unfairly targeted major American technology companies with substantial financial penalties.

Speaking on the issue, Trump argued that the European Union has imposed excessive fines on U.S.-based technology firms under the guise of competition and regulatory enforcement. He said his administration would examine whether the EU’s actions amount to unfair trade practices that disadvantage American businesses operating in Europe.

The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Brussels over trade, digital regulation, and market competition. In recent years, EU regulators have issued multibillion-dollar fines against several large U.S. technology companies for alleged violations of antitrust rules, digital market regulations, and consumer protection laws.

Trump maintained that American companies should be treated fairly in international markets and warned that the United States would not hesitate to respond if the investigation concludes that discriminatory practices have occurred.

European Union officials have consistently defended their regulatory actions, stating that enforcement decisions are based solely on compliance with EU competition laws and are applied equally to all companies, regardless of their country of origin.

Trade experts say the proposed investigation could add further strain to U.S.–EU economic relations, particularly as both sides continue negotiating issues involving digital services, technology regulation, tariffs, and cross-border investment.

Business analysts also note that increased trade tensions between two of the world’s largest economies could have implications for multinational corporations, investors, and global markets if the dispute escalates.

Despite the disagreement, officials from both the United States and the European Union have indicated that diplomatic and trade discussions remain ongoing as they seek to manage broader economic relations.
