Music streaming giant Spotify is rolling out a new verification system aimed at helping listeners distinguish authentic artists from the growing wave of AI-generated music on its platform.
In the coming weeks, users will begin to see green “Verified by Spotify” checkmarks on artist profiles that have undergone review by the company. The move reflects increasing concern within the music industry about the rapid rise of artificial intelligence tools capable of producing convincing songs that can be difficult for listeners to identify.
According to Spotify, artists eligible for the new badge must meet strict authenticity criteria. These include adherence to platform policies, consistent listener engagement, and clear evidence of a real-world presence, such as live performances, merchandise sales, and active social media accounts. The company added that human oversight will play a key role in the verification process to ensure credibility beyond automated checks.
The new badge builds on Spotify’s earlier verification systems. Its original blue “Verified Artist” checkmark, introduced in 2017, confirmed that an artist’s profile was officially managed. However, confusion around what verification represented led to its replacement earlier this year with a “Registered Artist” label. The latest green badge is designed to go further by explicitly signaling authenticity in an era increasingly shaped by AI.
The initiative comes amid rising scrutiny over AI-generated music infiltrating streaming platforms. In one notable case, a band known as The Velvet Sundown amassed more than one million streams before confirming that its songs were entirely AI-created. Similar incidents have fueled debate among listeners and industry stakeholders about transparency and trust in digital music ecosystems.
Spotify said the first wave of badges will prioritize artists who have made meaningful contributions to music culture and history, though more creators may receive verification over time as they meet eligibility standards.
The platform is also expanding efforts to improve transparency by introducing additional artist profile features, including sections highlighting career milestones, releases, and touring activity. These updates aim to give listeners more context about the people behind the music they consume.
As AI-generated content continues to evolve, Spotify’s latest move underscores the broader challenge facing the music industry: maintaining authenticity and trust while adapting to rapidly advancing technology.
