SpaceX to Acquire AI Coding Startup Cursor in $60 Billion Deal

SpaceX is moving ahead with its planned $60 billion acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor, a landmark deal that underscores the growing importance of artificial intelligence in software development and intensifies competition with leading AI companies.

The acquisition will see Cursor, developed by San Francisco-based startup Anysphere, become a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX when the transaction closes in the third quarter of 2026, according to a regulatory filing released Tuesday.

The deal follows an agreement announced in April that gave SpaceX the option to acquire Cursor outright or pursue a strategic partnership valued at $10 billion.

Cursor has emerged as one of the most influential AI-powered coding assistants since its launch in 2022. The platform gained widespread recognition for helping popularize the concept of “vibe coding,” a trend in which developers use advanced AI tools to generate, modify, and manage software code with minimal manual programming.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen SpaceX’s artificial intelligence capabilities as the company expands beyond aerospace and deepens its integration with Elon Musk’s AI initiatives.

Industry analysts believe Cursor’s popularity among professional software engineers was a major factor behind the acquisition. The platform has built a strong user base within the developer community, giving SpaceX access to a highly valuable network of technology professionals.

Cursor currently competes with AI coding products such as Anthropic‘s Claude Code and OpenAI‘s Codex. Despite competing with those firms, Cursor has also relied on partnerships with major AI model providers to power its software.

The company became particularly well known after developers began using its Composer feature alongside Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model, helping fuel the rise of AI-assisted programming. The term “vibe coding” gained popularity in early 2025 as developers increasingly relied on AI systems to handle substantial portions of software creation.

When the acquisition was first announced, Cursor said the partnership would provide access to advanced computing resources through SpaceX subsidiary xAI and its massive Colossus AI data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The infrastructure is expected to support the development of future AI products and accelerate research efforts.

The acquisition comes just days after SpaceX completed its highly anticipated public market debut. The company’s successful listing attracted significant investor interest and further strengthened Elon Musk’s influence across the aerospace, artificial intelligence, and technology sectors.

The purchase of Cursor represents one of the largest acquisitions in the AI software industry and highlights the growing race among technology companies to secure advanced AI tools capable of transforming software development.
