Serena Williams Enjoys Emotional Wimbledon Return Despite First-Round Defeat at Age 44

Serena Williams made a memorable return to Wimbledon on Tuesday, embracing every moment of her first singles match in nearly four years despite suffering a hard-fought three-set loss in the opening round.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, competing at age 44, received a thunderous reception from Centre Court fans as she returned to singles action for the first time since the 2022 U.S. Open. Williams ultimately fell 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to 20-year-old Australian rising star Maya Joint in a match that lasted 2 hours and 22 minutes.

“It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here,” Williams said in a statement released by tournament organizers. “The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything.”

Playing in front of her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and daughters Olympia and Adira, Williams demonstrated flashes of the power and skill that made her one of tennis’ greatest champions. She fired serves exceeding 120 mph and produced several trademark winners, but struggled with movement against the younger and quicker Joint.

Joint, ranked No. 87 in the world, handled the occasion impressively and secured her first career Wimbledon main-draw victory. The Australian matched Williams’ power from the baseline and capitalized on key moments throughout the contest.

“She has such an aura, she’s just a legend,” Joint said after the match. “I’ve been dreaming about this moment since I was a little kid, so this is pretty crazy.”

Williams entered the tournament via a wild card after announcing her comeback with a pair of doubles appearances ahead of Wimbledon. The seven-time Wimbledon singles champion has accumulated 98 career victories at the All England Club and remains one of the most successful players in the tournament’s history.

Fans greeted Williams with a standing ovation before the match, with many displaying welcome-back signs and tributes celebrating her return to professional tennis. The American responded with a competitive performance, including a dramatic second-set tiebreak victory in which she saved a match point and forced a deciding set.

However, Joint gained the upper hand early in the third set and eventually converted her third match point to seal the biggest win of her young career. Both players recorded 37 unforced errors, while Joint finished with a 40-26 advantage in winners.

Although her singles campaign has ended, Williams’ Wimbledon comeback is not over. She is still scheduled to compete in the doubles tournament alongside her older sister, Venus Williams, later this week.

Elsewhere at Wimbledon, second-seeded Alexander Zverev advanced to the second round after defeating Alexander Blockx in four sets, while defending champion Iga Swiatek overcame Taylor Townsend in three sets. No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina also moved on, while fourth-seeded Ben Shelton suffered a surprise first-round exit.

Williams’ return may not have produced a victory, but it delivered one of the most emotional moments of Wimbledon 2026, as one of tennis’ greatest icons once again stepped onto the sport’s biggest stage.
