The Nigeria Police in Kano State have raided the main palace of the Emir of Kano and taken over its security. Local hunters had been engaged to guard the re-instated Lamido Sanusi.
A local newspaper reported how the hunters, locally known as ‘Yan Tauri’, were recruited from across the state and deployed to the palace following a rumour that federal authorities were planning to relocate Aminu Ado-Bayero amidst the emirship tussle.
Federal security agents had taken up the responsibility of guarding Ado-Bayero at the Nasarawa mini palace, since he was removed by the state government last month.
A team of policemen were seen Sunday evening taking over the main emir’s palace, the Gidan Rumfa, as the hunters were playing card games and carrying out other activities, reports the local newspaper.
The spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, Haruna Kiyawa, was not available to comment on the development on Sunday evening. However, a security source at the palace disclosed that the hunters had been sacked.
“Did you need me to tell you that they (hunters) are no longer here? You can see it yourself; everyone has found his way”, said a police officer at the palace.
A Federal High Court had voided Mr Sanusi’s reappointment and asked the state government to halt the implementation of the Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024.
The judge, Abdullahi Liman, ruled that the reappointment of Mr Sanusi was null and void because the government failed to obey the court’s initial order restraining it from taking further action on the new emirate council law of the state.
