Police Launch Manhunt for Teen Suspect in University of Iowa Shooting That Injured Five

Authorities in Iowa City are searching for a 17-year-old suspect following a mass shooting near the University of Iowa campus that left five people injured.

Police have identified the suspect as Damarian M. Jones and say he is facing multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder. The shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday in a busy nightlife district close to campus.

According to the Iowa City Police Department, the incident began as a large fight involving up to 40 individuals. Investigators say Jones obtained a firearm during the altercation and, after briefly walking away, returned and fired multiple shots into a crowded pedestrian area.

Officials confirmed that none of the victims were specifically targeted or directly involved in the initial fight. One woman remains in critical condition with a severe head injury, while another victim is hospitalized in stable condition. The remaining three victims have since been treated and released.

Prosecutors, including Rachel Zimmerman Smith, outlined a series of serious charges against the suspect, including counts of willful injury and going armed with intent. Authorities have also recovered multiple firearms and ammunition as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police Chief Dustin Liston described the chaotic scene, noting that officers administered life-saving aid at the scene, including CPR and emergency transport to hospitals. More than 150 tips have been received, and dozens of search warrants have been executed as investigators work to locate the suspect.

City leaders have expressed concern over the impact of the violence on the community. Bruce Teague called the incident deeply painful, emphasizing support for victims and their families as they begin recovery.

In response to the shooting, additional security measures are being implemented around the university area, with increased police presence aimed at ensuring public safety.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to urge the public to provide any information that could assist in locating the suspect.
