Omaha Walmart Stabbing: Woman Shot by Police After Alleged Kidnapping Attempt Injures Toddler

A woman was shot and killed by police following a violent incident at a Walmart in Omaha, where authorities say she attempted to kidnap a child and injured him with a knife.

According to the Omaha Police Department, officers responded to an emergency call Tuesday morning at a store near 72nd and Pine Street. Upon arrival, they encountered a woman holding a knife to a 3-year-old child seated in a shopping cart.

Police said the suspect had approached the child and his caretaker inside the store, produced a large knife, and forcibly took control of the child, directing the caretaker to leave the building. Outside, the situation escalated as officers issued commands for the suspect to release the child.

Authorities stated that the woman then slashed the child across the face, prompting at least one officer to open fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The child was rushed to a hospital with a serious facial injury but is expected to recover, officials confirmed. No officers were injured during the incident.

Investigators believe the suspect may have taken the knife from inside the store and had no prior connection to the child or caretaker. The motive remains unclear as authorities continue their investigation.

A spokesperson for Walmart condemned the violence and said the company is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

The incident has raised concerns about public safety in retail environments, as officials work to determine the circumstances that led to the attack.
