WestJet and CUPE Reach Tentative Agreement, Bringing Job Action and Flight Disruptions to an End

Canadian airline WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) have reached a tentative collective agreement, ending labour action that had disrupted flights and affected thousands of travellers across Canada.

The agreement follows negotiations between the airline and the union representing WestJet cabin crew. While the full details of the proposed contract have not yet been released, both parties confirmed that the deal will be presented to union members for ratification in the coming weeks.

As a result of the tentative agreement, job action has been suspended, allowing WestJet to begin restoring normal flight operations. The airline said it is working to recover from recent cancellations and delays while assisting passengers whose travel plans were disrupted during the labour dispute.

WestJet thanked customers for their patience throughout the negotiations and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the service interruptions. The airline also reaffirmed its commitment to returning to its regular schedule as quickly and safely as possible.

CUPE described the tentative deal as an important step toward addressing the concerns of cabin crew members, noting that the agreement reflects progress made during negotiations. However, the union emphasized that the contract will not take effect until members have reviewed and voted on the proposal.

The labour dispute had raised concerns across Canada’s aviation sector, particularly during a busy travel period, with many passengers forced to reschedule flights or seek alternative transportation.

Industry analysts say the tentative agreement offers much-needed stability for travellers and the airline while helping to restore confidence in WestJet’s operations after days of uncertainty.

Both WestJet and CUPE expressed optimism that the agreement will support a more stable working relationship moving forward and minimize the risk of further service disruptions.
