NIGERIA: Sanwo-Olu Endorses Hamzat as APC Candidate for Lagos 2027 Governorship Race

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election, signaling early political alignment within the state’s ruling party.

The endorsement was announced following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to run for governor before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the decision to back Hamzat was unanimous among those present, including members of the influential Governor’s Advisory Council. He described the deputy governor as well-prepared and capable of leading the state, citing his experience and deep understanding of governance.

The governor highlighted Hamzat’s track record over the past seven years, praising his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to public service. He noted that Hamzat’s familiarity with the workings of government positions him strongly for the role.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the influence of Bola Tinubu, crediting him with fostering the leadership relationship that has shaped both his administration and Hamzat’s political development.

The announcement reflects a broader consensus among party leaders and stakeholders, with Sanwo-Olu describing the meeting as a consultative process that resulted in strong backing for Hamzat’s candidacy.

The move marks a significant early step in preparations for the 2027 elections, as the All Progressives Congress in Lagos begins to consolidate support and position its preferred candidate well ahead of the political contest.
