NIGERIA : Police, Oyo Local Government Deny Release of Kidnap Victims Following Igboho’s Ultimatum

The Oyo State Police Command and the affected local government authorities have dismissed reports claiming that victims abducted by suspected kidnappers were released following an ultimatum issued by Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The clarification comes amid widespread speculation that the kidnapped victims had regained their freedom after Igboho reportedly gave the abductors a deadline to release those being held captive.

However, both the police and local government officials have stated that the information circulating on social media and other platforms is inaccurate.

Speaking on the matter, police authorities emphasized that there had been no official confirmation of the victims’ release and urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports capable of causing confusion and panic.

“We have not received any report confirming that the victims have been released,” the police said. “People should refrain from spreading misinformation and allow security agencies to carry out their investigations and operations.”

Officials from the concerned local government area also denied the claims, maintaining that efforts were still ongoing to secure the safe return of the abducted individuals.

The controversy emerged after reports suggested that Igboho had issued a strong warning to those responsible for the kidnapping, demanding the immediate release of the victims or face consequences.

The activist, known for his outspoken stance on insecurity affecting parts of southwestern Nigeria, has in the past drawn national attention through his involvement in matters relating to the protection of local communities and advocacy for the Yoruba nation movement.

While supporters viewed the reported ultimatum as an attempt to pressure kidnappers, government authorities stressed that security matters remain the responsibility of law enforcement agencies operating within the framework of the law.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over insecurity and kidnapping in parts of Nigeria, where criminal groups continue to target residents for ransom despite intensified security operations.

Communities across several states have increasingly expressed frustration over recurring incidents of abduction, with residents often calling for stronger government action to protect lives and property.

Security experts warn that misinformation during kidnapping cases can complicate rescue efforts, create false hope for affected families, and undermine official operations aimed at securing victims’ release.

Authorities have therefore appealed to citizens, media organizations, and social media users to verify information through credible sources before sharing updates relating to security incidents.

Meanwhile, relatives of the abducted individuals continue to await positive developments as security operatives work to determine the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and locate those responsible.

The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safe rescue of victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.

As investigations continue, the conflicting narratives surrounding the alleged release serve as a reminder of the need for caution and accuracy when reporting on sensitive security matters.

For now, officials insist that there is no verified evidence that the kidnapped victims have regained their freedom following Igboho’s reported ultimatum.
