More than 737,000 people have been displaced across North-West Nigeria as persistent banditry and climate-related shocks continue to disrupt communities, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The figure highlights the growing humanitarian challenges facing the region, where insecurity, including attacks by armed groups and criminal gangs, has forced many residents to leave their homes in search of safety.
Climate-related events are also contributing to displacement, with floods, drought and other environmental shocks affecting livelihoods and worsening the vulnerability of communities already facing insecurity.
Many displaced families are reportedly struggling to access adequate shelter, food, healthcare, clean water and other essential services. The continued movement of people has also placed additional pressure on host communities that are receiving displaced families.
The situation is particularly concerning for rural communities that depend heavily on farming and livestock for their livelihoods. Displacement caused by insecurity and extreme weather can prevent residents from accessing farmland, markets and other sources of income.
Humanitarian organizations have continued to call for stronger support for displaced populations while urging authorities to address the underlying causes of insecurity and climate vulnerability.
