Spanish authorities have arrested Jonathan Andic, the eldest son of Mango fashion empire founder Isak Andic, over suspicions surrounding his father’s death during a hiking trip near Barcelona in December 2024.
Police in northeastern Spain confirmed Tuesday that Jonathan Andic, 45, was taken into custody as part of an ongoing homicide investigation tied to the death of the billionaire businessman, who founded the globally recognized fashion retailer Mango.
Isak Andic, 71, died after falling nearly 500 feet down a cliff while hiking in the mountains close to Barcelona. At the time of the incident, Jonathan Andic was reportedly the only witness present.
Investigators initially treated the incident as an accident and closed the case weeks later. However, authorities reopened the investigation in March 2025, and by October police officially confirmed they were examining the possibility that the death may have involved criminal activity.
Jonathan Andic was escorted Tuesday to court facilities in Martorell, a city in eastern Spain where the case is being handled. Catalan regional police, known as Mossos d’Esquadra, stated that the investigation remains under a nondisclosure order, limiting further public details.
Jonathan Andic is vice chairman of Mango’s board and one of the heirs to the fashion fortune built by his father. He is the eldest of Isak Andic’s three children.
Born in Turkey, Isak Andic moved with his family to Spain at a young age and launched Mango’s first store in Barcelona in 1984. Under his leadership, the company expanded into one of Europe’s largest fast-fashion retailers with thousands of stores worldwide.
Mango currently operates approximately 2,900 stores across 120 international markets. The company reported record revenues of nearly 3.8 billion euros in 2025, marking an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
The arrest has shocked Spain’s business and fashion communities, as investigators continue probing the circumstances surrounding the death of one of the country’s most influential retail entrepreneurs.
