Laurier Golden Hawks Secure Vanier Cup Spot After 19-Year Wait with Uteck Bowl Victory

The No. 2-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks are heading to the Vanier Cup for the first time since 2005 after a decisive 48-24 victory over the No. 6 Bishop’s Gaiters in the Uteck Bowl on Saturday in Lennoxville, Quebec. This win not only advances Laurier but also marks a 19-year milestone since their last Vanier Cup appearance, where they clinched the title with a nail-biting 24-23 win over Saskatchewan.

Led by standout quarterback Taylor Elgersma, who completed 30 of 34 passes for an impressive 452 yards and five touchdowns, Laurier dominated the game from the outset. The Golden Hawks surged to a 34-3 halftime lead at Coulter Field, showcasing their offensive firepower and cementing their path to the national championship game.

Receiver Ryan Hughes was a key target, catching three of Elgersma’s touchdown passes to help seal the win. Laurier’s next challenge will come against the winner of the Mitchell Bowl, featuring No. 3-ranked Laval against unranked Regina
