Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his estranged wife, Cerina Fairfax, before taking his own life just weeks ahead of a court-ordered deadline requiring him to move out of their shared home, according to police and court records.
Authorities responding to an early morning emergency call at the family’s residence in Annandale, Virginia, discovered both bodies inside the home. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis confirmed that Fairfax shot his wife in the basement before going upstairs, where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. One of the couple’s teenage children alerted emergency services.
The deaths come amid an ongoing and reportedly tense divorce process. Court filings reveal that a judge had ordered Fairfax to vacate the family home by the end of April, citing prolonged conflict and heightened tensions within the household. The couple, though separated for nearly two years, had continued living together with their children.
Judicial records also point to concerns about Fairfax’s mental and emotional state, referencing periods of isolation, heavy drinking, and withdrawal from family life following both his failed 2013 attorney general bid and the sexual assault allegations that surfaced in 2019. A judge noted that while Fairfax had recovered from earlier political setbacks, he “never bounced back” from the scandal that derailed his career.
Friends and associates described a pattern of growing distress in recent months. Sophia Nelson, a close friend, said Fairfax appeared deeply affected by past controversies and ongoing legal and financial struggles. She and others had urged him to seek help and expressed concern about his well-being.
Court documents also detailed domestic tensions, including a prior police visit in January following allegations made by Fairfax that were later contradicted by home surveillance footage. Financial difficulties were also noted, including a previously resolved tax lien and career setbacks that impacted his legal practice.
Cerina Fairfax, a respected dental professional, ran a successful practice and was an alumna of Duke University and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. She had been recognized for her professional achievements and community contributions.
Justin Fairfax once stood as a rising figure in the Democratic Party, elected lieutenant governor in 2017 and briefly positioned to become governor during the 2019 controversy involving then-Governor Ralph Northam. However, multiple sexual assault allegations — which he denied — effectively ended his political ascent.
