The Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, has identified insecurity as the most significant challenge confronting Northern Nigeria, urging greater collaboration among governments, security agencies, and community leaders to restore peace and promote sustainable development across the region.

Speaking at a public event, Governor Yahaya said persistent security challenges, including banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and communal violence, continue to hinder economic growth, discourage investment, and disrupt the livelihoods of millions of residents across the North.

According to the governor, no meaningful development can take place without a secure environment, emphasizing that security remains the foundation for economic prosperity, education, agriculture, healthcare, and social stability.

He noted that Northern Nigeria possesses enormous human and natural resources but warned that continued insecurity threatens the region’s ability to achieve its full economic and developmental potential.

Governor Yahaya called for stronger cooperation between the federal government, state governments, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local communities in addressing the root causes of insecurity.

He also stressed the need to complement military operations with long-term investments in education, job creation, youth empowerment, and poverty reduction, arguing that sustainable peace requires addressing the socio-economic conditions that often contribute to criminal activities.

The governor commended the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies while encouraging continued support through improved intelligence gathering, modern equipment, and enhanced coordination among law enforcement institutions.

He further urged citizens to actively support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could help prevent attacks and dismantle criminal networks.

Security experts have consistently identified Northern Nigeria as one of the regions most affected by armed insurgency, banditry, farmer-herder conflicts, and organized crime, with many communities experiencing repeated attacks over the past decade.

The continued insecurity has displaced thousands of people, disrupted farming activities, affected school attendance, and slowed infrastructure development across several northern states.

Political analysts believe stronger regional cooperation and sustained investment in both security operations and economic development will be critical to improving stability in the North.

Governor Yahaya reiterated that protecting lives and property remains a top priority for his administration, adding that lasting peace is essential for attracting investment and creating opportunities for future generations.

As governments continue implementing various security initiatives, stakeholders agree that a comprehensive approach combining military action, community engagement, and socio-economic development will be necessary to address the region’s complex security challenges.

The governor’s remarks reinforce growing calls for a united national response to insecurity, which many leaders consider one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.
