HERwake Conference and Exhibition: Empowering African Women Entrepreneurs in Winnipeg
The Africa Centre proudly hosted the highly anticipated HERwake Conference and Exhibition on Saturday, October 5th, 2024, at Soul Sanctuary in Winnipeg. This impactful event brought together over 150 women entrepreneurs of African descent, business leaders, and professionals to celebrate and empower African women in business. The conference featured an inspiring keynote speech, dynamic panel discussions, and an entrepreneurial awards ceremony, making it a powerful platform for knowledge-sharing, networking, and growth.
Event Highlights:
- Keynote Speech: Delivered by Phyllis Reid-Jarvis, founder of Ultimate Potentials, a Manitoba-based consultancy, who energized the crowd with her motivational talk about networking and growth opportunities for Black female entrepreneurs.
- Panel Discussions: The conference boasted insightful panel sessions featuring five influential women in business. Panelists included Rebecca Molinoff, US Consul in Winnipeg; Hon. Jamie Moses, Minister of Economic Development and Trade for Manitoba; Uchenna Nnadi, Director of Business Development & Client Relations, Nadi Group, Juanita Ama De-Souza-Huletey, founder of Afro-Fusion Cuisine; Deborah Zita Somakoko, President and Founder of the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce; and Valerie Ajayi, CEO of Women in Business Africa. They discussed critical topics such as mentorship, leadership, and building a sustainable entrepreneurial community.
- Exhibition: The exhibition showcased innovative businesses led by African women entrepreneurs, highlighting their contributions to the community and beyond.
- Entrepreneurial Awards: A highlight of the event was the presentation of Entrepreneurial Awards to three outstanding businesswomen who have made a significant impact in their fields. This recognition of their success was a celebratory moment for all attendees.
- Notable Guests and Remarks: The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Deputy Premier of Manitoba, who emphasized the importance of economic empowerment for Black women entrepreneurs. Deputy Mayor Janice Lukes and former PC Cabinet Minister Janice Morley-Lecomte were also in attendance.
