Harris and Walz Unveil Plan to Win Over Rural Voters, Target Trump’s Stronghold
In a bid to cut into former President Donald Trump’s rural voter base, Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have unveiled a comprehensive plan to address key issues affecting rural communities. The Harris-Walz plan, which will focus on healthcare, economic development, and agricultural reforms, aims to chip away at Trump’s nearly two-to-one advantage among rural voters, according to AP VoteCast data from 2020.
Healthcare Access and Workforce Expansion in Rural Areas
A central pillar of the Harris-Walz proposal is improving rural healthcare. The plan outlines the recruitment of 10,000 new healthcare professionals for rural and tribal areas through scholarships, loan forgiveness, and grants. It also calls for Congress to permanently extend telemedicine coverage under Medicare, a lifeline for millions during the pandemic that is set to expire at the end of 2024.
Additionally, the proposal includes new funding for volunteer EMS services to reduce the number of Americans living more than 25 minutes away from emergency medical care.
Economic Support for Farmers and Rural Communities
The Harris-Walz campaign promises targeted economic relief by advocating for the restoration of the Affordable Connectivity Program, which provided subsidies for home internet but expired in June 2024. Their proposal also urges Congress to require manufacturers to grant farmers the right to repair their equipment, a significant issue for agricultural workers.
Walz to Promote the Plan in Key Battleground States
Governor Walz will officially unveil the plan on Tuesday during a campaign stop in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, a critical battleground for the 2024 election. As part of the outreach strategy, Walz will feature in a new radio ad, sharing his small-town upbringing and football coaching experience to connect with rural voters.
“In a small town, you don’t focus on politics—you take care of your neighbors and mind your own business,” Walz says in the ad, which criticizes Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, for being self-interested. The ad will air across more than 500 rural radio stations in key swing states, including Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
A Strategic Push to Win Over Swing Voters
With just three weeks until Election Day, the Harris-Walz ticket is making a concerted effort to sway rural voters, who traditionally lean Republican. Democrats hope that appealing to economic concerns and healthcare access will help them chip away at Trump’s edge in rural regions. Both parties are working to expand their influence beyond their usual voter bases, knowing that even a small shift in voter behavior could determine the outcome in critical swing states.
