Gordie Howe International Bridge Set to Open July 27 Following Construction Delay

The long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge is officially scheduled to open on July 27, following a delay that pushed back the completion of one of North America’s largest cross-border infrastructure projects.

The new bridge will connect Windsor with Detroit, providing an additional crossing between Canada and the United States while improving the flow of commercial and passenger traffic.

Officials say the bridge is expected to strengthen trade between the two countries by easing congestion at existing border crossings, reducing travel times, and increasing transportation efficiency for businesses that rely on the busy Canada–U.S. trade corridor.

The project experienced construction delays due to a combination of technical challenges, supply chain disruptions, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite those setbacks, authorities confirmed that final inspections and operational preparations are now nearing completion.

Named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, the six-lane cable-stayed bridge is designed to become one of the busiest trade gateways in North America.

Government officials on both sides of the border welcomed the opening date, describing the bridge as a major investment in transportation infrastructure that will support economic growth, job creation, and cross-border commerce for decades to come.

The crossing will feature modern customs and inspection facilities intended to improve border processing for both commercial trucks and private vehicles.

Transportation experts believe the new bridge will enhance supply chain resilience by providing an alternative to the Ambassador Bridge, which has handled a significant share of trade between Canada and the United States for many years.

Businesses across Ontario, Michigan, and the broader North American manufacturing sector are expected to benefit from improved freight movement once the bridge becomes operational.

Authorities are finalizing traffic management plans and operational testing ahead of the official opening ceremony scheduled for July 27.

The completion of the Gordie Howe International Bridge marks a historic milestone in Canada–U.S. infrastructure cooperation and is expected to play a key role in supporting future economic integration between the two neighbouring countries.
