FBI Director Kash Patel Sues The Atlantic for $250M Over Defamation Claims

Kash Patel has filed a $250 million lawsuit against The Atlantic, accusing the publication of defamation over a report alleging excessive drinking and unexplained absences during his tenure leading the FBI.

The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. federal court in Washington, D.C., describes the article as a “malicious” and “false” attack on Patel’s character and leadership. The report, written by journalist Sarah Fitzpatrick, cited anonymous sources who claimed Patel engaged in concerning behavior, including heavy drinking and erratic conduct.

A central claim in the article involved an incident on April 10, when Patel was reportedly locked out of an internal FBI computer system and allegedly feared he had been dismissed. In the legal filing, Patel’s attorneys acknowledged the login issue but described it as a routine technical problem that was quickly resolved, rejecting claims that he panicked or believed he had been fired.

The lawsuit further disputes allegations بشأن Patel’s conduct, stating he is regularly present at FBI headquarters and frequently visits field offices. It also denies any claims of excessive alcohol consumption or misconduct, insisting that such assertions are “demonstrably false.”

Patel’s legal team argued that the sources cited in the article are biased and lack direct knowledge, describing them as individuals with personal or political motives.

In response, The Atlantic said it stands by its reporting and will vigorously defend against the lawsuit, calling the legal action meritless.

Patel, who has served as FBI director since 2025 following confirmation during the administration of Donald Trump, has previously been involved in controversies, including the dismissal of FBI الموظفين tied to investigations related to Trump.

The case sets up a high-profile legal battle that could test the boundaries between press freedom and defamation claims involving senior government officials.
