Eastern Canada is recovering after a powerful snowstorm dumped heavy snow across the region, marking the second storm in recent days. Quebec was hit hardest, with Montreal and Laval recording around 40 centimeters of snow by Monday morning. The Eastern Townships accumulated 35 centimeters. Snowfall is expected to continue in Montreal into Monday, with Environment Canada issuing a blizzard warning for southern and central Quebec, including the St. Lawrence region and Gaspé Peninsula.
Montreal’s snow removal efforts are expected to take several days as plows work to clear 11,000 kilometers of streets. City officials have advised residents to remain patient, as snow piling and loading operations will extend for weeks. Several daycares and schools in the Greater Montreal area are closed due to the snow.
Meanwhile, Ontario’s Family Day holiday has reduced the number of people on the roads, with lighter traffic expected. Snowfall in southern Ontario and Quebec has already accumulated between 20 and 40 centimeters in some regions. In Ottawa, over 30 centimeters of snow fell, while Hamilton saw 32 centimeters. Snow squall warnings remain in effect for some areas, including the Bruce Peninsula and Georgian Bay, where up to 60 centimeters of snow is expected.
Toronto is facing difficulties clearing downtown streets due to the massive snow accumulation. After 40 centimeters of snow earlier this week, an additional 26 centimeters has added to the challenge. Snow removal will take up to three weeks, with workers clearing roads and relocating snow piles to storage sites.
Quebec’s highways have been impacted by multiple accidents, including a 20-vehicle collision near Drummondville. Snowstorms also caused flight cancellations and delays at Toronto Pearson and Montreal-Trudeau airports. The extreme weather has led to about 200 collisions in Ontario and hundreds of vehicles stuck in snow. Meanwhile, Western Canada faces extreme cold temperatures, with windchills reaching –45°C in some areas, though temperatures are expected to rise later in the week.
