However, this surge in popularity has also attracted online fraudsters looking to take advantage of eager fans. Scammers are exploiting the desire for tickets to Swift’s sold-out shows, leaving some fans heartbroken and out of thousands of dollars.
One fan, Summer Nickel, a long-time Swiftie from Maple Ridge, B.C., shared her experience of trying to purchase resale tickets for the Vancouver shows. Despite her efforts, she has encountered multiple scams. “It’s just hard to point out who is real,” said Nickel, who nearly fell victim to a scam through a hacked Facebook account.
Cybersecurity experts, like Toronto’s Ritesh Kotak, warn that scammers often pose as friends, making the fraudulent offers appear legitimate. “These tickets are a hot commodity,” Kotak explained, adding that hackers will exploit any opportunity to deceive fans.
To combat these scams, police advise verifying the seller’s identity by calling the friend directly before making any payments. Unfortunately, victims rarely recover their lost money. Fraud is on the rise in Canada, with Statistics Canada reporting a near doubling of fraud cases over the past decade, and online platforms like Ticketmaster are tightening rules to prevent further scams.
