The Kansas City Chiefs have secured the future of superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes by agreeing to a restructured long-term contract that extends his stay with the franchise through the 2033 NFL season.
According to multiple reports, the new deal increases Mahomes’ total compensation to $504.75 million, with incentives and performance escalators that could raise the value to approximately $522.25 million. The agreement adds two years to the quarterback’s existing contract and makes him one of the highest-paid players in professional sports.
Mahomes originally signed a groundbreaking 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs in 2020, a deal that set a new benchmark for NFL contracts. The latest extension further strengthens his position at the top of the quarterback market, raising his average annual earnings to approximately $63.1 million.
The updated agreement comes after several star quarterbacks signed lucrative contracts in recent years, including Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Jordan Love, pushing quarterback salaries to new heights across the league.
Mahomes has spent the offseason recovering from a serious knee injury suffered late last season. The quarterback underwent season-ending surgery after tearing ligaments in his left knee during a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in December. Despite the setback, he has participated throughout the Chiefs’ offseason program and remains focused on returning for the start of the regular season.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes’ dedication during rehabilitation, noting that the quarterback has worked tirelessly to maintain timing and chemistry with teammates while continuing his recovery.
The Chiefs are hopeful that Mahomes will be fully available when the team opens its regular season on September 14 against the defending AFC West champion Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.
Since becoming Kansas City’s starting quarterback in 2018, Mahomes has established himself as one of the most successful players in NFL history. He has thrown for nearly 36,000 yards, earned six Pro Bowl selections, won two MVP awards, and guided the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl championships in five appearances.
The contract extension signals the Chiefs’ continued commitment to building around their franchise quarterback while maintaining their status as perennial championship contenders. Team executives have frequently restructured Mahomes’ contract over the years to create salary-cap flexibility, allowing Kansas City to strengthen its roster and remain competitive.
