Australia Stuns Turkey 2-0 to Open World Cup Campaign in Vancouver

Australia kicked off its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in impressive fashion on Saturday, defeating Turkey 2-0 in Vancouver despite spending much of the match under intense pressure.

Goals from rising star Nestory Irankunda and midfielder Connor Metcalfe secured all three points for the Socceroos, who produced a disciplined defensive performance to spoil Turkey’s long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.

The victory marked a strong start for Australia in Group D and highlighted the team’s resilience, as Turkey dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities but failed to find the back of the net.

Turkey, appearing in its first World Cup since 2002, controlled 72 percent of possession and outshot Australia 30-9. However, the Turkish side was repeatedly frustrated by Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who delivered a standout performance with eight crucial saves.

Beach’s inclusion in the starting lineup came as a surprise after coach Tony Popovic opted to leave experienced goalkeeper Matthew Ryan on the bench. The decision proved inspired as Beach consistently denied Turkey’s attacking threats throughout the match.

Australia took the lead in the 27th minute when 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda broke through a crowded defense and fired a low shot into the net. The goal came shortly after the first-half hydration break and shifted momentum in Australia’s favor.

Irankunda celebrated by punching the corner flag in tribute to Australian football legend Tim Cahill. The strike also saw the Watford forward become the youngest player ever to score for Australia at a FIFA World Cup.

After the match, Irankunda revealed that comments made by Turkey captain Hakan Calhanoglu before kickoff provided extra motivation for the Socceroos.

Calhanoglu had suggested Turkey possessed greater quality and talent than Australia, remarks that the Australian squad used as fuel heading into the contest.

Turkey continued to press for an equalizer throughout the second half, with Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler and Juventus star Kenan Yildiz among those attempting to break down Australia’s defense. However, Beach remained composed and produced several important saves to preserve his side’s lead.

The decisive second goal arrived in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe capitalized on a costly turnover by Turkish midfielder Ismail Yüksek. Metcalfe calmly finished the opportunity to double Australia’s advantage and effectively put the result beyond doubt.

Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella acknowledged Australia’s tactical discipline after the match and admitted his side failed to convert its dominance into goals.

Despite the defeat, Turkey showed flashes of quality and remains hopeful of advancing from a competitive Group D that also includes the United States and Paraguay.

Australia enters the tournament with growing confidence following its strong showing at the 2022 World Cup, where the Socceroos advanced to the Round of 16 before being eliminated by eventual champions Argentina.

The latest victory reinforces Australia’s reputation as one of the most difficult teams to break down in international football and provides a valuable boost ahead of its remaining group-stage fixtures.

With the United States already securing a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay in the group’s other opening match, the race for qualification from Group D is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing battles of the tournament.
