AOC Endorses Abdul El-Sayed in High-Stakes Michigan Democratic Senate Primary

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has officially endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s closely watched Democratic Senate primary, marking the first time the progressive congresswoman has taken a side in a contested Senate primary race.

The endorsement is considered one of Ocasio-Cortez’s most significant political moves of the 2026 midterm election cycle and could provide a major boost to El-Sayed’s campaign as he competes for the Democratic nomination in one of the nation’s most important battleground states.

In a statement released by the campaign, Ocasio-Cortez said El-Sayed has demonstrated the strongest path to victory in November and praised his focus on working-class voters.

“After watching this campaign unfold for well over a year, it has become clear that Abdul El-Sayed is the strongest candidate to keep this seat in November,” she said. “He is building a winning coalition by putting forward an agenda that speaks directly to working people.”

El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health director, is competing in a three-way Democratic primary against Haley Stevens and Mallory McMorrow ahead of the August primary election. The winner will advance to the general election in November, where control of a key Senate seat will be at stake.

Responding to the endorsement, El-Sayed praised Ocasio-Cortez’s leadership and progressive record, describing her as a champion for ordinary Americans.

The endorsement also highlights growing divisions within Democratic Party leadership. Ocasio-Cortez’s backing of El-Sayed contrasts with the position of Chuck Schumer, who has publicly supported Stevens in the race.

The Michigan contest has become a focal point in a broader debate among Democrats about which candidates are best positioned to win competitive elections. El-Sayed has campaigned as the most progressive candidate in the field, while Stevens has emphasized a more moderate approach aimed at attracting independent and swing voters. McMorrow, meanwhile, has sought to bridge the party’s progressive and moderate wings.

The race has attracted significant endorsements from across the Democratic spectrum. Stevens has received backing from several Democratic senators, including Ruben Gallego, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Chris Coons. McMorrow has secured endorsements from prominent Democrats such as Elizabeth Warren, Chris Murphy, and Martin Heinrich.

Michigan remains a crucial battleground for both parties. Democrats are determined to retain the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters as they seek to regain control of the chamber.

The Democratic nominee is expected to face Republican former Congressman Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost Michigan’s 2024 Senate race to Elissa Slotkin by less than half a percentage point.

With Michigan once again expected to play a decisive role in national politics, Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement could become a significant factor in shaping the outcome of one of the most competitive Senate primaries of the 2026 election cycle.
