The chairman of Nigeria’s tripartite committee on national minimum wage, Bukar Goni has called for a reduction in the cost of governance especially in government expenditures
He says this will help raise funds internally to afford a national minimum wage for workers which can now be equated to a living wage
The Chairman made this known during a one-day retreat on labour reforms. He expressed optimism that Nigeria’s working class will soon have a living wage approved
In his presentation at the occasion, Goni said that, as Chairman of the Tripartite Committee which was made up of 37 members, including him, at one of the meetings, they all agreed on the need to increase the minimum wage of workers but however, the Committee could not reach a conclusion on how much was needed to be increased minimum wage.
He said that he listened to the views presented by organized labour, the Federal Government and the Private sector, pointing out that each of the three groups made sense of the need to increase the minimum wage but where would the money come from, looking at the national economy and current inflation rate in the country.
Goni then advised the Federal government to reduce the cost of governance in order to save more money for national productivity, using appropriate reforms.
