TORONTO, Ontario — The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) has appointed former federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau as its next board chair, marking a leadership transition at one of Canada’s largest financial institutions.
The bank announced the appointment on Friday, October 30, 2026, confirming that Morneau will officially assume the position on January 1, 2027.
He will succeed Katharine B. Stevenson, who is scheduled to retire from CIBC’s board on December 31, 2026, after serving six years as chair and a decade as an independent director.
Morneau has been a member of CIBC’s board since 2022 and currently chairs its Corporate Governance Committee. His appointment brings together experience in federal government, corporate leadership and financial oversight.
Morneau Brings Government and Business Experience
Morneau served as Canada’s Minister of Finance and as a Member of Parliament from 2015 to 2020. During his time in government, he was involved in major economic and fiscal policy decisions and represented Canada in international financial discussions.
Before entering politics, he spent 25 years leading Morneau Shepell, a human resources and pension services company that grew into one of Canada’s largest providers of workplace services.
His experience in both public administration and private-sector management was among the qualifications highlighted by CIBC when announcing the appointment.
In addition to his responsibilities at CIBC, Morneau currently serves as chair of NovaSource Power Services and as a director of Clairvest Group Inc. He also sits on CIBC’s U.S. board and previously chaired the bank’s Technology Committee.
CIBC Prepares for Leadership Transition
Morneau will take over from Stevenson, whose departure marks the end of a six-year period as chair.
During her tenure, Stevenson also served as an independent director, bringing her total time on CIBC’s board to 10 years.
In announcing the transition, Stevenson praised Morneau’s strategic insight and leadership experience, expressing confidence in his ability to guide the board as the bank pursues its long-term growth objectives.
Morneau also acknowledged Stevenson’s contribution, describing her leadership and guidance as important to the bank’s development. He said he was honoured to succeed her and intended to build on the foundation established during her tenure.
Governance and Technology Remain Important Priorities
Morneau’s appointment comes as major financial institutions continue to navigate changes in banking technology, digital services, cybersecurity and regulatory requirements.
As chair of CIBC’s Corporate Governance Committee, he has already been involved in overseeing aspects of the bank’s governance framework and board responsibilities.
His previous leadership of the Technology Committee also gives him experience with issues involving technological development and its implications for banking operations.
However, CIBC has not announced any specific policy changes or strategic restructuring connected to his appointment. His immediate responsibility will be to lead the board and support its oversight of the bank’s management and long-term direction.
CIBC’s Position in the Canadian Banking Sector
CIBC is one of Canada’s major financial institutions, serving personal, business, public-sector and institutional clients through its banking, commercial banking, wealth management and capital markets operations.
The bank also maintains operations in the United States and other international markets.
The appointment of a new board chair is an important governance development because the position involves overseeing the board’s work, supporting accountability and providing strategic guidance to senior leadership.
With Morneau scheduled to begin his new role in January 2027, the transition will formally take place after Stevenson completes her tenure at the end of December.
The announcement places a former federal finance minister in a prominent leadership position within Canada’s banking industry, adding another chapter to Morneau’s career in public service and corporate governance.
