PM Mark Carney Says Alberta’s Choice of Unity Is ‘A Great Result’ for Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed Alberta voters’ decision to remain part of Canada, describing the referendum outcome as “a great result for Canada” and calling for stronger cooperation between the federal government and the province.

The referendum, held on Monday, October 19, 2026, asked Albertans whether the province should begin the process toward a future vote on separation from Canada. Early results showed approximately 75 per cent of voters supported remaining in the Canadian federation, while around 25 per cent backed pursuing separation.

Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday, Carney said the result demonstrated that Albertans had chosen unity and wanted to continue building the country together.

Carney Calls for Stronger Federal-Provincial Cooperation

Carney said he spoke with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on Tuesday morning to discuss the referendum results and the path forward for the province and the federal government.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Ottawa and Edmonton, including immigration and other issues affecting Alberta. Carney emphasized the importance of working together to build a stronger Canada while recognizing the province’s economic importance.

The prime minister also said he and Smith discussed support for victims and families affected by the deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.

Alberta’s Separatist Movement Faces a Setback

The referendum result represents a setback for Alberta’s separatist movement, which has gained attention amid long-standing frustrations over federal policies, energy development and the province’s relationship with Ottawa.

Although most participating voters supported remaining in Canada, separatist advocates argued that the roughly one-quarter who backed pursuing separation showed that dissatisfaction with the federal government remains significant.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith welcomed the early results, saying voters had supported a stronger Alberta within a united Canada. Smith has opposed independence while facing pressure from separatist voices within her governing United Conservative Party.

The vote was non-binding. A majority in favour of separation would have initiated a process toward a future referendum rather than immediately making Alberta independent.

National Unity Remains a Priority

Alberta’s decision comes amid heightened tensions between Canada and the United States, including trade disputes and remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump about Canada becoming the 51st American state.

Carney has emphasized national unity as Canada works to strengthen its economy, expand international trade and develop major energy projects.

While the referendum has reinforced support for Alberta remaining in Canada, the results also highlight continuing divisions over federal-provincial relations.

The challenge for Carney and Smith will now be translating the outcome into practical cooperation and addressing the concerns that fuelled support for separatism.
