Kenya Confirms Third Ebola Case as Health Officials Intensify Containment Efforts

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya has confirmed its third Ebola case after a 65-year-old woman, who is a relative of the first patient to die from the disease in the country, tested positive while in quarantine.

The Ministry of Health announced the new infection on Friday, October 16, 2026, saying the woman had been under quarantine since October 6 after being identified as a close contact of the initial patient. She developed symptoms before testing positive and was transferred to an infectious disease treatment unit for medical care.

The development comes as Kenyan authorities intensify efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission.

All Three Cases Linked to First Patient

Kenya’s first confirmed Ebola patient was a 40-year-old man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) before travelling to Nairobi. He died on October 5, two days after arriving in the Kenyan capital.

The second confirmed case involved a 39-year-old male relative of the first patient. Health officials said he remained in stable condition as of Friday.

Authorities have emphasised that all three infections are linked to the initial case. So far, there is no evidence of community transmission, as the two subsequent patients developed symptoms while under quarantine.

Contact Tracing and Screening Intensified

Kenyan health officials have identified 130 people who may have come into contact with the first patient. Of these, 127 had been traced and placed under quarantine, while efforts continued to locate the remaining three.

The government has also strengthened health screening at border crossings and airports, particularly for travellers arriving from countries considered at high risk of Ebola transmission.

The outbreak has raised concerns about gaps in screening procedures after the first patient travelled through the region before his diagnosis. Authorities are working with neighbouring countries to trace additional contacts and reduce the risk of further infections.

Ebola Outbreak in Congo Raises Regional Concerns

Kenya’s cases are linked to an outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The outbreak has recorded thousands of cases and more than 4,000 deaths, according to recent reports.

The Bundibugyo strain currently has no licensed vaccine or specific approved treatment, making early detection, isolation and supportive medical care particularly important.

Health authorities continue to urge anyone who may have been exposed to the virus to report symptoms and provide accurate travel and contact information.

Although Kenya’s third confirmed case has increased concern, officials maintain that there is currently no evidence of wider community spread. Contact tracing and monitoring will remain critical to preventing further infections.
