BC Greens Demand Public Input on AI Data Centre Projects

The British Columbia Green Party says local communities should have a direct say in deciding whether artificial intelligence (AI) data centres are built in their areas, arguing that existing government proposals do not go far enough to address concerns about electricity consumption, water use and environmental impacts.

BC Green Party Leader Emily Lowan said the New Democratic Party’s proposed regulations fail to clarify whether communities would have the power to reject data centre projects before construction begins.

The debate comes as British Columbia prepares for its October 24, 2026, provincial election, with AI infrastructure and access to electricity emerging as important policy issues.

Greens Call for Stronger AI Data Centre Regulations

The BC Greens have proposed suspending the construction and operation of AI data centres until a detailed public-interest audit is completed and an appropriate regulatory framework is established.

The party also wants to work with the federal government to create an independent AI oversight commission to strengthen accountability and address potential risks associated with rapidly developing artificial intelligence technologies.

Lowan argued that communities need more than information about how much water a data centre consumes after it becomes operational. In her view, residents should have an opportunity to influence whether such facilities receive approval in the first place.

NDP Proposes Water-Efficiency Measures

NDP Leader David Eby has announced proposed measures that include water-efficiency standards, mandatory reporting of water consumption and community engagement on water conservation and drought planning.

The proposals would also maintain existing BC Hydro limits on electricity allocated to data centre projects.

However, the Greens say these measures do not adequately address whether communities should have the authority to oppose new developments.

The disagreement highlights a broader policy challenge: balancing investment in emerging technologies with the need to protect local resources and ensure residents have a meaningful role in decisions affecting their communities.

Major AI Infrastructure Projects Planned for BC

In May 2026, telecommunications company TELUS and federal AI Minister Evan Solomon announced plans involving three AI data centres in British Columbia, including two in Vancouver and one in Kamloops.

TELUS previously indicated that the facilities could require a combined 150 megawatts of electricity by 2032. That level of demand has intensified discussions about how the province should allocate its power supply as industries and communities compete for electricity.

Supporters of AI infrastructure argue that such investments could strengthen Canada’s technological capabilities, attract businesses and support economic development. Critics, meanwhile, have raised questions about energy consumption, water resources, environmental effects and the benefits local communities would receive.

Public Consultation Takes Centre Stage

As the election campaign continues, the future of AI data centres is becoming part of a wider debate about economic growth, environmental protection and public accountability.

The BC Greens want stronger safeguards before additional projects proceed, while the NDP’s announced approach focuses on resource efficiency, reporting requirements and community engagement.

The outcome of the debate could influence how British Columbia regulates AI infrastructure and balances technological investment with the interests of residents.
