The B.C. New Democrats are highlighting the expansion of LNG Canada’s export terminal in Kitimat as an economic achievement as the provincial election campaign enters its second week.
B.C. NDP Leader and Premier David Eby pointed to LNG Canada’s Phase 2 expansion after the company announced a C$33 billion investment that will double the facility’s export capacity to 28 million tonnes per year. The project is expected to create about 4,000 construction jobs and generate significant government revenues.
Eby described the investment as a major development for British Columbia and said the expansion demonstrates the importance of cooperation between governments, First Nations, businesses, workers and local communities.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who attended the announcement, also emphasized the role of cooperation in advancing the project. He described the development as an example of what he called “team Canada” working together.
The LNG Canada expansion is particularly significant for Canada’s efforts to diversify its export markets. The Kitimat facility ships natural gas to Asian markets, offering an alternative route for Canadian energy exports beyond the United States. The expansion is expected to increase the facility’s capacity from its current level to 28 million tonnes annually.
The announcement has become part of the political debate during B.C.’s election campaign. The B.C. Conservatives have proposed tripling provincial LNG production by 2035, while the NDP has argued that projects already under development are on track to exceed that target.
The Conservatives have also criticized the NDP’s past approach to LNG development, arguing that the province could have moved more quickly on the sector. The competing positions highlight a broader debate over how B.C. should balance resource development, economic growth, government revenues and environmental considerations.
The expansion is expected to involve further infrastructure and supply-chain work, including upgrades associated with the Coastal GasLink pipeline. LNG Canada’s Phase 2 is expected to strengthen Canada’s position as an LNG exporter while providing access to growing Asian energy markets.
With the provincial election underway, the LNG announcement gives all major parties another opportunity to outline their economic and energy policies as British Columbians consider the province’s future direction.
