Loblaw’s PC Health Launches AI Chatbot as More Canadians Turn to AI for Health Information

Loblaw Companies Limited has launched PC Chat, an AI-powered health chatbot designed to give Canadians quick access to health information and guidance as more people turn to artificial intelligence for answers to medical questions.

The chatbot is available through PC Health and Shoppers Drug Mart apps and was developed specifically for the Canadian healthcare environment. Loblaw says PC Chat is backed by more than 1,000 Canadian clinical sources, including medical guidelines and information from health organizations.

According to Loblaw, PC Chat is designed to provide users with plain-language information and help them identify appropriate care options. The company says the tool can also provide more personalized responses when users choose to connect their Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy records.

The launch comes as AI tools become increasingly popular among people seeking answers to health-related questions. PC Chat reportedly handled more than 100,000 inquiries during its first week, highlighting the growing demand for easily accessible digital health information.

Loblaw says conversations with PC Chat are stored in Canada and protected under Canadian privacy laws. Users can also access the chatbot without providing personal information, although those who connect pharmacy records can receive more personalized responses.

Despite the growing use of AI in healthcare, experts caution that chatbots should not be treated as replacements for doctors, pharmacists or other qualified healthcare professionals. AI-generated information can be incomplete or inaccurate, particularly when symptoms require a medical examination or urgent intervention.

PC Chat includes safeguards designed to direct users toward appropriate professional care in situations requiring immediate attention. The tool is also intended to provide general health information rather than independently diagnose or treat serious medical conditions.

Privacy remains another important consideration. While Loblaw says the service follows Canadian privacy requirements, experts say users should understand how health information and pharmacy data are handled before connecting personal records to AI systems.

PC Chat is currently unavailable in Quebec and New Brunswick while Loblaw works on a French-language version.

The launch reflects a broader shift in Canada’s healthcare landscape as retailers, technology companies and healthcare providers explore ways to use AI to help people find health information more quickly.
