Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are being complicated by injuries, forcing head coach Eric Chelle to reconsider his attacking options.
Recent reports say Victor Osimhen is unavailable for the upcoming fixtures, while other squad concerns have also emerged. The situation creates an opportunity for players competing for places to prove that Nigeria’s attack can remain productive without its most established striker.
Depth becomes the story
International football squads are judged by their ability to absorb injuries. Nigeria has several forwards capable of playing at a high level, but replacing a recognised first-choice striker is never straightforward.
The coaching challenge is tactical as well as personnel-based. A team built around one type of striker may need a different approach when that player is unavailable.
For supporters, the upcoming qualifiers will therefore reveal more than the final score. They will show whether Nigeria has enough depth to rotate its squad while maintaining its attacking identity.
The best response to an injury crisis is not panic. It is preparation, clear selection criteria and confidence in the next player.
